Les Psychotropiés was created through an experimental analogue process using a vintage Kodak Brownie camera. Instead of film, Karoline Georges inserted sheets of Ilford photographic paper directly into the camera. Each exposure was immediately developed in the darkroom, producing a unique paper negative, which was then rephotographed onto conventional film to obtain a positive image.

The series consists of portraits of friends who posed for the artist. Its title emerged while she was writing her first novel, La Mue de l’hermaphrodite, whose fictional world explores psychotropy and the creation of new psychotropic substances. Psychotropiés, a term coined by the artist at the time, evokes bodies and identities transformed by altered states, as well as by the photographic process itself.

Les Psychotropiés a été réalisée selon un procédé argentique expérimental à l’aide d’un ancien appareil Kodak Brownie. Plutôt que d’utiliser une pellicule, Karoline Georges insérait directement des feuilles de papier photographique Ilford dans l’appareil. Chaque image était aussitôt développée en chambre noire, produisant un négatif unique sur papier, que l’artiste rephotographiait ensuite sur une pellicule conventionnelle afin d’en obtenir une image positive.

La série réunit des portraits d’amis ayant posé pour l’artiste. Son titre est apparu pendant l’écriture de son premier roman, La Mue de l’hermaphrodite, dont l’univers explore la psychotropie et la création de nouvelles substances psychotropes. Forgé par l’artiste à cette époque, le mot « psychotropiés » évoque des corps et des identités transformés par des états de conscience altérés, mais aussi par le processus photographique lui-même.
