The first phase of the project Objects of Sublimation, a work-in-progress about the avatar Kyrie Source, has been presenting the character's sublimation process since December 2009. The current transformation is available on the Kyrie Source blog .
Using extensive photographic documentation and links in the Second Life metaverse, the first phase of the project presents the components of the character's ever-increasing collection of sublimation objects, a collection consisting mostly of donations from artists who are refining virtual corporeality.
The ideal as an object of fate.
Transformation and transmutation methodologies for instruments.
Virtual reality as a sublimated and sublimating dimension.
How can we go beyond the automatic experience of the body, a body-machine destiny that repeats the same operations in order to ephemerally support a biological existence in the world?
How can we self-actualize and precisely determine our fate?
By migrating into virtual media?
Through technological enhancement of the flesh?
Kyrie Source is a reflective experience projected into a virtual dimension.

December 2009: Kyrie Source appears in fashion feeds.
She posts more than 250 self-portraits during her first year online.
Over 100 designers from some 30 countries send her their creations, which become components of the work-in-process.
BACK
As a result of her online work-in-progress, Kyrie Source has received many invitations. As a columnist, she has contributed to the most prestigious publications of Second Life, including AVENUE magazine and Modavia Fashion Directory.
By activating her sublimation process, Kyrie Source propelled herself to the centre stage of Second Life's haute couture industry. Captivated by her style, many designers have chosen her to represent their brand. Kyrie Source soon became a muse for artists from Japan, Croatia, Italy, Germany, Brazil and the United States.

Protée
Kyrie Source is the digital incarnation of the novel's narrator Ataraxia, a character with an extremely powerful desire for sublimation. This initiative was the first stage of a hypermedia experiment, as the intention was not to adapt the novel to the digital dimension and re-enact what happened in the book; instead, the goal was to create a continuation beyond the novel, by activating and interacting with the character's identity.
How can a literary character exist in an interactive mode in a virtual world? Or more accurately, what type of interaction would be appropriate for this unusual character?
The plausible interactivity then became apparent: the character had to find "adjuvants", which could help "perfect her perfection" (an expression used by the narrator in the novel).
To attain her idealized state, the character had to plunge into the maze of the metaverse to find extremely demanding designers - artists who are motivated by the same desire: to achieve the sublime through aesthetic wizardry. Together, they are developing different aspects of the new virtual being.
Some of the artists specialize in making skin; some are proving to be top designers; while others are animators who are tailoring the body to match her personality.
But the various components, found here and there, still needed to be put together in order to breathe life into the character and set the highest aesthetic standards for her - until a state of the sublime was achieved that reflected her own personal taste.
